Kosciuszko Bridge, NYC: Construction Inspection
Gedeon GRC Consulting provided construction inspection services for the construction of a new bridge carrying I-278 Brooklyn-Queens Expressway over Newtown Creek on the Brooklyn / Queens border – Phases I & II.
  • Construction of a new cable-stayed main structure consisting of steel-edge girders, steel floor, beams, precast deck panels, stay cables, cable shielding and anchorages, cast-in-place concrete footings, anchor pier columns, cap beams, and pylons
  • Construction of approximately 2 miles structures for the new Brooklyn and Queens approach consisting of PCEF girders, cast-in-place reinforced concrete footings and piles, pier columns, cap beams and cast-in-place reinforced concrete deck and new precast modular retaining walls along approaches
  • Reconstruction of seven local ramps with new concrete pavement and barriers for the new bridge and certain neighboring streets in project boundaries
  • Construction of approximately 4-mile concrete pavement and barriers sections of I-278 BQE between Varick Avenue and 54th Road
  • Construction of new landscaped areas and a plaza by Meeker Avenue
  • Highway appurtenances including signage, guide rails, and concrete median barriers
  • Work Zone Traffic Control (WZTC) requiring detours and lane closures and nights and weekends work
  • Utility relocation and construction of water mains, sewer lines, gas lines, electrical cables, telephone cables, and ITS and construction of new highway lighting system for project

Services included ensuring all work is being performed in conformance with contract documents including but not limited to detailed inspection, on-site field testing of materials, field measurement, data collection, and progress reports.

Gedeon GRC also provided consulting services for CM& QA for the Phase I Design-Build replacement of the Kosciuszko Bridge over Newton Creek, Queens, for the construction of a new 1.1-mile-long viaduct. The Design-Build contract included a 600-foot-long, cable-stayed main span structure to carry I-278, Brooklyn Queens Expressway (BQE) – East Bound over Newton Creek adjacent to and east of Kosciusko Bridge (BIN 1075699), carrying the BQE over Newtown Creek.

General scope of work included site supervision, compliance with the Design-Builder’s Quality Control Plan (to ensure that all requirements and standards were met, as well as schedule; to verify safety and perform workmanship Quality Control (QC); and to supervise material testing – ensuring that all the tests were performed in compliance with ASTM Requirements and Standard Specifications according to QA plan), and preparation of complete daily reports of construction activities.


All work was performed in accordance with the Manual of Uniform Record Keeping (MURK).
